Exploring Arabic Media
This is a practical, introductory course that gives a fast-paced overview of a broad range of topics related to contemporary Arabic media, we will discuss old-fashioned Arabic media, which includes America-based Arabic TV and radio broadcasting as well as Arab TV and radio broadcasting and the most widely-read Arabic newspaper. We will also cover the social media sphere, which is overwhelmingly used by Arabs, in particular the youth. If you are an Arab and you do not have a Facebook page, you do not exist. Twitter will also be covered. The most important topic we will discuss is the difference between how Americans expect Facebook to be used and how Arabs use it. For instance, Arabs enjoy tagging all of their friends in Eid or Ramadan Mubarak photos during holidays and they are comfortable publicly discussing religion, politics, and other sensitive topics. Whether you are simply a devout Muslim or a Libyan arms dealer, it will be clear from looking at your Facebook page.
